Project Diary: Weeks 1 - 4

Inspiration

The visual elements of the room were inspired by the minimalist aesthetic of Dieter Rams, an industrial designer active in the late 1960s.

Moodboard: Minimal Industrial design

Carrying on with the theme of the 60s, the room resembles much like the final shot in film ‘2001: A Space Odyssey' and has a very symmetrical composition.

The Symmetry in composition will carry through into the live-action footage, which will be filmed in Raw to aid colour grading.

Planning

Filming

To make filming more practical I decided to choose areas that are near north-east England which could be easily accessed with one or two exceptions. It was decided that a dolly and track  would be used to create smooth motion and to increase the production value.

Camera's Available for Use

  • Sony FS7 Mk 1
  • Canon C100 Mk 2
  • Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.6K
  • Blackmagic Ursa 4K

After looking through the specifications of all available cameras and lenses,  I decided to choose Blackmagic Ursa with the canon mount since it had the best image quality with great dynamic range and resolution with Proress 444, DCI 4K and Internal raw recording with up to 120fps.

The downside to this is how heavy and unwieldy the URSA is, which means it requires a crew of people to move and help operate it with the equipment I wanted to use.

CGI

For the CG assets, I wanted a mixture of hard surface and also some organic modelling to show I could tackle both, but due to time constraints I decided to have one asset that I could focus on, which had hard surface elements and organic curves.

Post Production

For post-production, I will be using the colour grading labs which has calibrated monitors and appropriate lighting to help create a neutral starting point. I'll also use a colour charts to calibrate the colours in camera to later match in post.

For colour correction and grading, Davinci resolve will be used for its native raw integration and powerful grading tools.

Pre-Visualisation

I wanted to make sure the all the cameras were finalised and all the layout worked out before I started the project.  A previs was created with mostly crude geometry and some of the simpler models that were already completed.

Modelling

Dayton Audio SUB-1200

Being a fairly simple model it was all done in Maya.

MODELS
Being the most complex asset this required a mixture of hard surface Modelling and also sculpting. The base mesh was created in Maya, remeshed in Zbrush, and later reopologised in Maya for better topology and to make sure it worked with subdivision.

The details will be sculpted in Zbrush and a displacement map used to get the high poly details.

In the following weeks I'll carry on working on the rest of the Modelling, Displacement maps of the Table, UVs, Texturing and Look Dev.
